Who Will You Serve

Who Will You Serve

I’ve recently been reading through the accounts of the various kings of Israel and Judah and it’s intriguing to see how many shifts in faithfulness can happen throughout the generations. 1 & 2 Kings and 1 & 2 Chronicles give us a bird’s eye view of centuries worth of history concerning God’s people. We read about times where they were faithful and strong, we read about times when they were mostly doing what they should have done, but linger in some frustrating habits, but mostly we read about them being in rebellion to God. My main takeaways through this specific reading has been that each generation must be diligent in their responsibility to pursue God. While it’s important that we educate, inspire, and guide our young to be faithful later in life (see Deuteronomy), ultimately it is up to them to choose their own path. Some of the best kings ended up handing their throne to some of the worst kings! And vice versa! Thankfully, God does not define us by our predecessors or successors – and there’s even examples of God holding off on bigger-picture judgements for the sake of present faithfulness (2 Kings 22). We have to decide who we will be, and if we will follow God. Maybe you’re coming from a family that hasn’t known God for a long time and you’re the first in generations to come back to faithfulness like Josiah. Maybe you’re like Asa who follows behind faithful leaders but is ready to go a step further and seek God even more. Or maybe you’re tempted to move away from the God that has blessed your people like Jehoram.

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15
