God's Compassion

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.” Hebrews 1:1-3

God has fully revealed himself to us through His Son Jesus. If we want to get to know God better we need to look to Jesus. There are interactions recorded in the gospels that reveal God’s compassion.

“Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.” Matthew 14:13-14

Jesus had just recently been informed about John’s death. This was the death of someone who had played an important part in Jesus’ ministry. But more than that, John was close to Jesus. Upon hearing this news, Jesus decided to go off by himself. Sometimes we can forget that Jesus was human like us, and he went through times of trial and heartbreak like we do.

While Jesus was taking some alone time to mourn, the crowds found him and surrounded him. Instead of telling them to go away and give him a break, he had compassion on them. He healed their sick and provided them with food.

Jesus shows us that God has compassion on those who need help. As God’s children we need to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and be God’s hands and feet by having compassion for those around us.

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.” Colossians 3:12
