Disconnected

Disconnected

I was traveling this past week and from Monday to Tuesday I found myself without cell service.  In addition to the inability to make cell phone calls, the internet was also down.  Even the Wi-Fi in the place I was staying was down for most of the same time, which meant that no television was available.  So here I am with no phone, no tv, no internet and no email.

The biggest inconvenience that I had was that I missed a meeting that I was supposed to phone in for.  I was frustrated in that, not only could I not call in, but my texts and emails were not going through to let the meeting attendants know that I would be unable to connect with them.

For me personally, not having the electronics was not an issue.  It was nice to not have the distraction, but what I did notice was that I was still checking my phone every few minutes.  It was as if I was on a subconscious autopilot.  I cannot tell you how many times I had gone through the motions until I caught myself.

How many tasks do we perform each day on autopilot?  How many habits have we formed that we just do and give little thought towards?  I think that it is human nature, and we are creatures of habit.  In some cases, I believe this can be to our advantage.  Brushing our teeth, shutting off an appliance, or closing the garage door.  Some of these things we do out of habit, and they get done.  With other things, we need to be more deliberate and make sure we do not become disconnected.  Our worship, our time in prayer and our time in study are some of the things I can think of that need our attention.  These should be habits, but habits that we are very intentional about and very focused on.  This connection to God is vital for our well-being.  We need to work very hard to make sure it is always up and running and the signal strength is strong.
