The Magnificat

The Magnificat

The Gospel story started with a song. Not just any song, but a song that rang out as a battle cry against the forces of this world.

And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.

From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name.

His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors." (Luke 1:46-55)

When Mary learned that she would give birth to the savior of the world, she sang about two things: the joy that would come and the reversal that was waiting for those who leaned too heavily on this world. Mary knew that when the Messiah entered the world it wouldn’t be about creating a calm little religion – but it was a global revolution where the principalities and powers would be brought down, and God would once again reign. The book of Acts could almost be called “The book of Riots” based off what followed the Apostles everywhere they went. We are agents of a revolution. Let us be so faithful to the way of God that it stirs up the world around us and lifts up those in need.

Blessings,
