A Running God

A Running God

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. Though people may have become calloused through familiarity, it is truly a powerful story. Whether it’s the younger son’s resignation, the older son’s resentment, or the Father’s grace there’s something for almost everyone. To me, the greatest moment is when the Father goes running to greet his son who has just crested the horizon on his way home.

You see, in their day and culture, grown men did not run. Especially not elderly, wealthy, men like this one. Double especially not over someone as undeserving as this ruined son. And yet, Luke 15:20 tells us “while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” That father, our Father, is the kind of God who looks longingly for his rebellious children to come home. Our Father is the kind of God who does the undignified to show us His love.

Our Father is the kind of God who sacrifices and celebrates just to be in relationship with us again, regardless of our past failures.

What a beautiful, wonderful Father we have.

Blessings,

Houston
