I Gotta Do That Again
I Gotta Do That Again?
I mowed my lawn before I went traveling last week. It looked really nice and tidy. When I got back from my trip, it was overgrown and going to seed. What happened? Do you mean I have to mow it again?
Some things in life just require multiple iterations of effort. I’ve got to wash dishes every night! I’ve got to do my laundry every week! I’ve got to get my hair cut regularly (although less often than I used to). Some things just require repetition.
Many things in our Christian walk require repetition. In fact, if we want to grow in Christ we have to make regular, repeated effort to do so.
Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me”.
Acts 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for the received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
John 13:35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
And so on.
Following Christ is not a one and done kind of thing. Yes—we have to do it again. But the beauty is each day with this effort we become more like him.
