The Spirit Within Us

The Spirit Within Us

I have enjoyed the dialogue in the adult bible study on Sunday mornings.  Our study this past week focused on God speaking to Samuel in chapter three of 1 Samuel.  Our conversation moved to how God speaks to us today.  How lucky are we to have the Bible containing the perfect words of God.  The Bible is our guide and provides us with the scriptures that we need to learn about His plan for us.  When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit through baptism, our sins are washed away and we begin a new journey as a member of His church.  God spoke to us in the scriptures so that we could get to that point.  We must hear the word in order to believe and the words we need to hear are contained in the Bible.  As I reflected on this later in the week, I was drawn to 1 Corinthians chapter 2.  In addition to gaining knowledge through the scriptures, Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit reveals God’s Wisdom.  “These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit, The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.  For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them?  In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.” (I Corinthians 2: 10-12)

So yes, God is speaking to us today.  Both through the scriptures and through the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.  As Jesus told us in John 14:26, But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

I pray that each of us work to continue our conversation with God through prayer and study and that we allow the Holy Spirit to help us listen to what God is telling us.
