A Healthy Faith

A Healthy Faith

My daughters expressed interest in having a garden of flowers that they can cut, enjoy, and give away this summer; this was an easy thing to say yes to, but it’s proven to be a good bit more work than I realized. A whimsical desire for pretty flowers has meant lumber and hours spent building a raised garden bed, it has meant securing the right kind of soil and fertilizer, not to mention prepping seeds and sprouts to have success when facing the elements. What may seem like a natural occurrence of beauty actually has many layers of hands-on work built into those blossoms.

The same is true of our spiritual lives. A healthy faith requires a lot more hands-on, intentional work than most people realize. It takes churning up the rocky soil of a hard heart, pulling up thorns of distractions, constant watering and fertilizing, and more to reach our potential in faith. When you see a “giant of the faith” out in the world, you can trust that they didn’t reach that stature overnight, it took a lot of cultivation to reach that point. Thankfully, the same Great Gardener is available to each and every one of us. Put yourself in his hands, participate in the work, and you’ll be surprised what beauty you can produce.

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” – John 15:4
