Light and Dark
Light and Dark
In his writings, the Apostle John has the recurring themes of darkness and light. With the breathtaking eclipse that we all witnessed yesterday, with its period of darkness and amazing return of the light, my mind returned to many of those familiar passages:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).
“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1: 4-5).
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin” (1 John: 5-7).
“But whoever lives by truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God” (John 3: 21).
John is trying to teach us very profound lessons by linking Jesus, truth, love, light and life all together. Darkness is ignorance, sin, fear, hopelessness, falsehood, and hate. In this murky fog of despair, Jesus appears like a beacon to dispel the darkness. I was amazed, like many of you, how dark it was during the total eclipse, yet it only took a sliver of the sun to bring back the light. So, it is with the Son of God- Jesus encourages us to follow his example and be a light to those around us. Who can you bless today?
"In the same way, let your light shine before other, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”
