The Chronicles of Narnia
The Chronicles of Narnia are nearly 75 years old, but are still incredible in sharing about Jesus through its analogous story. One of my favorite nuggets comes when the Pevensie kids first hear about the Great King Lion named Aslan, “’Is he safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion.’ Said Susan. ‘Safe?’ said Mr. Beaver; ‘who said anything about safe? Of course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.’”
I feel like there’s a tendency in our world to depict Jesus as this cutesy figure who wears a nice white robe and dotes on people all the time. But that’s not what Jesus looks like at all! The Son of God we find in the writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John is consistently turning things on their heads! He disrupts systems and flips over tables! For any who would enjoy the ways of this world Jesus is by no means safe. And yet, he is good beyond measure and he loves beyond degree. Encountering Jesus very rarely doesn’t shake up our lives; but it’s always for the better. Don’t try to box Jesus in, let him frighten and challenge you. But also seek his goodness through that tumultuous encounter. That is where we find the true joy of discipleship.
