Bread of Life
In John chapter 6 Jesus was presented with a great teaching opportunity. He had just recently fed five thousand, miraculously providing them all with bread. A little while later the crowds of people were seeking Jesus out. They weren’t really interested in who He was or in truly following Him, but they wanted free food. Being aware of their intentions, Jesus was presented with a great teaching opportunity.
“33 For the bread of God is [a]that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” John 6:33-35
After correcting the people by explaining that it was God and not Moses who provided the true bread out of heaven, Jesus explained that the bread of God gives life to the world. When they asked Him to give them this life giving bread, Jesus responded by informing them that He was the bread of life.
It is Jesus who came from God to give life to the world. We pursue things like wealth, success, relationships, and other things hoping that they will fill whatever voids we feel exist in our lives. But Jesus is the source of everything that we need, chiefly: hope, salvation, and life. All of those other things will fall short and let us down, but Jesus never will.
“51 I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.” John 6:51
