Coming to God

It seems to be a pretty universal experience that when life is at its hardest, when we’ve been pushed to our very limit and are facing seemingly unfathomable circumstances, we are brought to our knees to seek God’s help. Even many staunch atheists have admitted to turning to God when events in their life got to be too much. Whether they followed up on those moments of seeking God is another story. In John 4, we’re told of a noble man who sought Jesus to beg him to heal his dying son. What he discovered was a loving teacher who was already at work healing his son even from far away. We might say we’re “coming to God” on our knees, in despair, or some other way, but are we really coming to God? We usually find out in those hard moments that he was there all along, we just finally decided to start engaging him.

“You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.” (Psalm 139:1-6)

You are never alone. Both when things are incredibly good and when they are incredibly bad, God is present with you. He will not forsake you. Therefore live your life with eyes open to see Him, eyes open to hear Him, and a hand ready to be guided by Him.

Blessings,
