Your Spiritual Journey
Worship The Living God
Last weekend our young people went on a trip to an annual youth conference where they were joined with thousands of others to pray and learn and worship the living God. Such mountaintop experiences are always so impactful for a person’s faith. I, myself, was energized and rejuvenated by that very conference for over 15 years! But it has occurred to me recently that many of us reach a new stage of life where we don’t have these ongoing rhythms of conferences, revivals, or camps. Our faith must learn to be nourished on the seemingly “mundane” elements of the Christian walk. And this has led me to offer two thoughts of encouragement:
1) Find ways to refresh your faith. Even the most faithful Christians find themselves occasionally stuck going through the motions. Therefore, look for innovative ways to keep your heart, mind, and soul focused on Jesus and passionate for his glory and mission. Obviously this doesn’t mean trying to jump from mountaintop to mountaintop, but instead consider ways you can have your eyes opened to God. Start a new study with friends, try more invigorating spiritual disciplines, or try to see the world through God’s eyes for a time. Find practical ways to keep your fire going strong.
2) Don’t allow your faith to be reliant on the glittery. Usually the things that bring us to these mountaintop experiences are the exceptional speakers, song leaders, and crowds, and while these things are great to be enjoyed and utilized, we run the temptation of needing them to keep our faith afloat. If we get to a point where we need the ecstatic to keep us faithful, I’m not so sure how well rooted that faith really is. God speaks in the everyday doldrums, look for Him there and experience His goodness daily.
Peace,
Houston
